A deterministic approach was used to evaluate open nucleus schemes for the Holstein-Friesian cattle population in Uganda. The breed is popular among market-oriented production systems. Though the breed fits well in some agro-ecological zones of Uganda, its adaptability still poses problems. Selecting it under conditions in which it is intended to perform would improve on its performance in terms of adaptation to the available local resources. The study covered the Lake Victoria Crescent region of Uganda with an on-going herd/milk recording scheme which provided data that was used. The government owned Njeru Stock Farm is to serve as the central nucleus. The specific objectives of the study were to estimate reproductive coefficients and evaluate a range of open nucleus schemes (genetic) for the breed. In view of the market conditions, available information, and resources, only two traits, total lactation milk yield (MY) as a production trait and calving interval (CI) as a fertility trait, were considered in the aggregate genotype and in the selection criteria. The estimated means and standard deviations (in brackets) got were as follow: MY, 3266 (969) kg; CI, 444 (92) days; Lactation Length, 322 (61) days; Age First Calving, 968 (207) days; number of services per conception 1.7 (1.09); productive life of cows, 4 years. The economic weight of traits of interest were derived from profit functions using the partial budgeting method and were standardized on the basis of genetic standard deviations. Their relative economic importance in the index were 98.25% for MY and 2.63 for CI. A breeding population of 100,000 or 50,000 animals in a two-tier open nucleus scheme, with a nucleus size of 500 and 700 animals was modelled. A large nucleus with a high proportion of cows (0.6) mated with young bulls, using progeny testing in the nucleus and a resticted selection index in regard to CI was found to be optimal.
