The Paleogene represents the period in the Earth’s history between 65 and 24 million years before the present day. It starts after the big mass extinction event at the Mesozoic/Cenozoic boundary and is marked by global climatic changes in its younger epoch. This time interval has been intensively studied on a worldwide basis resulting in detailed knowledge of many aspects of the Earth's evolution. This volume presents a modern overview of this time period in the Eastern Alps and introduces a great variety of hitherto unpublished data. It comprises 18 papers covering a wide range of earth science fields: geodynamic, palaeogeographic, and palaeotopographic evolution; facial development; litho- and biostratigraphy; systematic palaeontology and palaeoecology of several organism groups (calcareous nannoplankton, foraminifera, molluscs, bryozoa, echinoids, palynoflora).
