The series of the "Complete Edition of the Historical Recordings 1899-1950", begun in 1999 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Phonogrammarchiv, is continued in Series 5 "The collections of Rudolf Trebitsch". Rudolf Trebitsch was one of the last amateur ethnologists and still able to finance his travels himself. In contrast to many other explorers of his time, he chose less exotic areas by systematically recording samples of language and music amongst the Inuit of Greenland, the Celtic peoples, and the Basques. The considerable size of his total collection and its three distinct parts suggested a subdivision of the series into three different volumes (Series 5/1: Recordings from Greenland (Kalaalit Nunaat) 1906; Series 5/2: Celtic Recordings * Ireland, Wales, Brittany, Isle of Man, and Scotland (1907-09); Series 5/3: Basque Recordings 1913). During three successive summers spent in Celtic speaking areas of Europe Rudolf Trebitsch established a phonographic collection of Celtic languages and folk music unparalleled. The recordings are highly intersting, partly because of the voice portraits of famous personages they contain (e.g. Joseph Loth or Peter O'Leary).
