Invited by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), an international workshop entitled "Scaling Problems in Hydrology" was held in Vienna on 7th and 8th June 2001. The initiative came from the ÖAW-hosted National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (IHP). The National Committee runs a program under this name; it focuses upon the laws and parameters that govern the space/time-variability of hydrological processes. The purpose of the workshop was to present the work that has been done within this program and to contrast it with reviews given by international experts from the research field and from the services.
Collected in this issue are extended summaries of the articles presented. They fall into one of the following three broad categories: 1. Scales in catchment modelling; 2. Linking meteorology with hydrology; 3. Downscaling precipitation.
