In this work three new inquiries into little-known highland populations of the extended Eastern Himalayas are presented. The central concern is ethnographic documentation of peoples’ proactive quest for life, in terms of fertility, virility, procreation and revitalisation by way of practicing their ritual cultures. The work also provides fresh perspectives for understanding ‘bon’-identified cultural phenomena in Himalayan and Tibetan societies. The final inquiry explores new hypotheses about the ethnolinguistic identities and prehistory of speakers within the Tibeto-Burman language family.

Der Tibetologe Toni Huber hat kaum bekannte Hochlandbevölkerungen im erweiterten östlichen Himalayagebirgssystem erforscht und präsentiert in diesem Werk drei neue Untersuchungen. Zentrales Thema ist die ethnographische Dokumentation des aktiven Suchens dieser Menschen nach Leben in Bezug auf durch rituelle Praxis erlangte Fruchtbarkeit, Virilität, Fortpflanzung und Revitalisierung. Der Autor hinterfragt auch die Beziehungen zwischen sogenannten 'bon'-Riten und Schamanen als rituellen Spezialisten, indem er neue Perspektiven aufzeigt, wie als 'bon' identifizierte kulturelle Phänomene in himalayaischen und tibetischen Gesellschaften verstanden werden können. Der dritte Themenbereich stellt neue Hypothesen zu ethnolinguistischen Identitäten und der Vor- und Frühgeschichte von Sprechern der tibeto-burmesischen Sprachfamilie auf, die entlang der südlichen und östlichen Ränder des tibetischen Hochplateaus leben.
