Ziel des Typenatlas der römischen Reichsprägung (TAR) ist die systematische Bearbeitung der Reverstypologie von Münzen der römischen Prinzipatsepoche. Im abschließenden dritten Band des Werkes werden Tiere, Fabeltiere, Pflanzen und Gegenstände untersucht, und zwar nicht nur als Hauptmotiv, sondern auch als Attribut. Die Darbietung geht vom Typ aus und nicht von der Legende, denn diese erklärt oft nicht das Bild. Auf eine Beschreibung jedes Typs folgen Kurzangaben, wann und in welchen Nominalien er ausgeprägt wurde. Daran schließen sich jeweils Tabellen mit den entsprechenden Legenden und Nachweisen an. Auf  86 Tafeln sind alle besprochenen Typen abgebildet. Die neuartige Analyse der Reverstypologie wendet sich nicht nur an Numismatiker:innen, sondern ermöglicht auch den Vertreter:innen der Nachbardisziplinen einen leichteren Zugang zu einer der zentralen zeitgenössischen Primärquellen.

The aim of the project TAR is to provide a systematic analysis of the reverse typology of Roman imperial coins of the Principate. The third and final volume of the work covers animals, mythical creatures, plants and objects – not only as main coin motives, but also as secondary attributes. The work is organised iconographically, not according to the accompanying inscriptions, since the legends often do not directly explain the types. The description of each type is followed by indications on chronology and on the denominations in which it was struck; the legends are listed in tables with references for each type. All types are illustrated on 86 plates. This new analysis of the reverse types of Roman imperial coins will be a most useful tool for numismatists, and will also provide researchers from neighbouring disciplines with a key to interpreting one of the most important primary sources for Roman culture.
