In der Zeit vom 7. bis zum 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. wurden in mehreren Städten Babyloniens, besonders in Babylon, täglich Beobachtungen des Himmels angestellt und auf Tontafeln aufgezeichnet. Dabei geht es um die Positionen von Mond und Planeten und ihre Phänomene wie erste und letzte Sichtbarkeiten, aber auch um das Wetter, den Wasserstand des Euphrat und die Preise von wichtigen Nahrungsmitteln. Diese „astronomischen Tagebücher“ (Astronomical Diaries) sind zwar zum größten Teil fragmentarisch und decken nur einen kleinen Teil des erwähnten Zeitraums ab, liefern aber trotzdem Einblicke in ein Beobachtungsprogramm, das über sieben Jahrhunderte aufrecht erhalten wurde und das auch für heutige Astronomen noch wertvolles Material enthält. Der vorliegende Band IV enthält diejenigen Astronomical Diaries, die wegen ihres fragmentarischen Zustands nicht datiert werden konnten, und Nachträge mit Diaries, die nach Erscheinen von Band I–III datiert wurden. Damit sind alle heute bekannten Exemplare dieser Textgruppe in Umschrift und Übersetzung zugänglich. Es ist zu erwarten, dass insbesondere die nachträglich datierten Diaries das Interesse von Astronomen und Historikern finden werden und neue Details zur Geschichte Babyloniens in der hellenistischen und parthischen Zeit liefern.

From the 7th to the 1st century BC, daily observations of the sky were performed and their results written down on clay tablets in some Babylonian cities, especially in Babylon. The observations concern the moon and the planets and their phenomena, as well as the weather, the level of the River Euphrates and the prices of important commodities. While these "Astronomical Diaries" are mostly fragmentary and cover only a small part of the period concerned, they nevertheless provide important insights into an observational program that was carried out over seven centuries and contains valuable material even for modern astronomers. Volume IV contains all Astronomical Diaries that were too fragmentary to be dated and, in an Addenda section, those that it was only possible to date after the publication of volumes I–III. Together, volumes I–IV provide the complete edition of this group of cuneiform texts. It can be expected that the newly dated Diaries in particular will prove interesting for astronomers and historians, and will contribute new details to the history of Babylonia in the Hellenistic and Parthian periods.
