Jeremias Gotthelf authored the six annuals of the ‚Neuer-Berner-Kalender‘, one of the most important calendar projects of German-speaking Switzerland in the 19th century. With him the calendar becomes a medium of popular education, which follows in the footsteps of the enlightenment of the people. The article considers the calendar reform project of Bern in its political, pedagogical, and pastoral contexts. In the liberal administration of the Bern regeneration period a governing function was attributed to the calendar, comparable to the mentality of government as promulgated by Michel Foucault.
