Abstract

Ilse Aichinger, Ingeborg Bachmann, and Edmond Jabès, in spite of their completely different background, have one point in common: they have written about the limits – about the limits of language and about the limits of writing. These limits, however, are for them not a border, a line separating two areas ; they are conceived of rather as a no man’s land that is to be explored and fathomed. It is an in-between, a flowing space between two shores, that is to be filled with a language not yet existing and still to be invented. ‘Translating’ and ‘bordering’ are the performative passwords of a literary land seizure that can be grasped only in a fragmentary way, as a distant becoming.
