Abstract

Samuel Beckett has been called the poet of the void. The scenes he creates are often abstract and impossible to locate. References to natural landscapes are sparse. The desert is a significant exception in this respect as it repeatedly appears as a motif in his later dramatic texts. This article examines the different characteristics of the desert in Beckett´s plays and aims to evaluate them with regard to the functions they fulfill in the author’s work.
