Abstract

The oribatid mite species in this Austrian checklist belong to 198 genera and 79 families. The total of 676 species includes 24 subspecies; 22 species (cf.) are not clearly identifiable, and three species are new to science but have not yet been described. Furhtermore, species or subspecies are mentioned that have been classified by some authors as "species inquirendae“ or „subspecies inquirendae“. Overall 623 valid taxa remain (606 species and 17 subspecies), and 26 of them represent unpublished first records for Austria. In this checklist 117 additional taxa are added in comparison with the number of species published in the Catalogus Faunae Austriae in 1983. Analysis of numbers of oribatid mite species from the different provinces of Austria reveals strong regional differences.
