Abstract

This paper aims to quantify potential regional deprivations in the region Oberpinzgau (Salzburg) for comparison in the context of the renegotiation of the fiscal equalisation scheme. Such an attempt, however, is a sensitive topic since deprivations are quantifiable and to be reduced to a single comprehensive index only to a limited extent. In this study the methodological development of a Multiple Deprivation Index (MBI), to be applicable for Salzburg and Austria, is introduced. Based on it, it is possible to illustrate the demographic and socio-economic potentials and challenges of the region Oberpinzgau.
