Abstract

The ethnic structure of a territory is the outcome of in- and out-migrations in thewake of specific historical events and under specific historical circumstances. Our analysisfocuses on the case of a German community in Transylvania [Ardeal], the Saxons, who during some eight hundred years have stamped their strong mark on the culture andcivilisation of this territory, which has thus acquired a remarkable tourist potential. TheSaxons had been settled down in the Middle Ages to defend the frontiers of the HungarianKingdom. However, after World War II, political and economic circumstances made mostof their followers return to their land of origin.
