Abstract

The present article proposes new readings for two recently published Roman altars found near Dürnstein/A and not yet included in the Norican vol- ume of Corpus-F.E.R.C.AN (Vienna 2019). The icono- graphy of one of the altars points to a smith-god, and the new readings lead to a Celtic divine name Dubri- cos “The dark one”, possibly an epithet either of the Roman god Vulcanus or of the Celtic divine smith Gobanos. The new theonym finds a match in the name of one of the oldest Welsh saints, Saint Dyfrig, a famous churchman occasionally referred to as Sanc- tus Dubricius papa.
