Abstract

This contribution examines the influence of the development of diagnostics as initiator for medical child protection. Data for this analysis was a thorough study of the medical-historical literature on the topic, including previous research results. The implementation of protective measures depends on different societal and subject-specific discourses, which can be mutually supportive or inhibitive. The medicalization of child-protection was subject to constant change. The establishment of imaging procedures facilitated the classification of findings. This development as well as phases of increased media attention have enabled and supported the scientific debate on the maltreatment of children.
