Abstract

The presented research project deals with the multifunctional Vienna Civic Hospital in the Early Modern Period. The key questions concern the differentiation and separation of inmate groups and the specialisation and professionalization of the staff caring for inmates fromthe 16th to the 18th centuries, finally leading to the reforms of Emperor Joseph II in the 1780s. Due to a lack of previous research, the first part of the project was dedicated to an analysis of selected account books and therefore of the hospital’s revenue and expenditure. The currently running second part focuses on inmates and staff, primarily analysing inmate directories and files.
