The monastery and hospital of the Brothers Hospitallers in Brno was founded in 1747by the Count of Dietrichstein. The plans of the building and probably also of themonastic church of St. Leopold were made by F.A. Grim. Of good quality and free ofcharge, the medical care offered to male patients without reference to confession andorigin was made possible, beside other factors, by the introduction of a detailedadministrative system – the patients’ registers. Their quantitative analysis for the years1748-1780 shows that the average mortality of the Brno hospital reached 11,6 %, thetotal admission number being 10499 patients. A random sample of 541 patients (5,2%) was analysed focussing on contemporary diagnoses of the diseases, duration ofhospitalization, age structure, countries of origin and occupations of the patients asindicators of their social background.
