The military presence of the legio VII Galbiana in Car- nuntum has been generally accepted since E. Ritter- ling wrote his article in the “Realenzyklopädie”. Epi- graphic evidence for the location of this troop does not exist, therefore it was necessary to examine criti- cally the information Tacitus gave and to look for alternatives. As a result of their special form, and thanks to an analysis of the dead with regard to their original homes and, in particular, their occupations, the grave monuments built in Carnuntum in the years between AD 68 and 71 helped in identifying who was stationed in the military camp during those years.
