Schwerpunkt: Objekte als Quellen der Medizingeschichte
In this project, medical instruments from the historical surgical collection of the University ofWürzburg are being examined. The aim is both the exact characterisation and (functional)description of the instruments, as well as the examination of the collection against the backgroundof the professionalisation of the surgical profession between 1750 and 1850. The corequestions are: To what extent can the professionalisation of surgery in the 19th century beillustratedby the surgical teaching at the University of Würzburg? In what way is the relationshipbetween its doctors and craft surgeons reflected in the present teaching collection? The study starts from the instruments themselves as the main source. First results haveshown that not all instruments were functional from the beginning and that they were onlyused in university teaching as show and teaching specimens.
