Abstract: Moulages – wax sculptures of pathologically altered body parts – were a popular teaching aidin dermatological training in the first half of the 20th century. In view of the threatening situationin a world highly armed with poisonous gas, it was an obvious step to include this establishedobject of training before and during the Second World War in military medical training onwarfare agent injuries. The work focuses on the twelve warfare agent moulages of the Departmentof Dermatology at the University Hospital Würzburg, their production circumstances andlater usage in the Medical Academy of the Air Force (Ärztliche Akademie der Luftwaffe) inWürzburg are to be investigated. The cooperation between the successful Mouleur Fritz Kolbowand the Wehrmacht toxicologist Otto Muntsch is of particular importance for the production ofthe warfare agent moulages. The comparison with other warfare agent moulages in the German-speakingarea as well as an illumination of the teaching possibilities offered by warfare agentmoulages due to continued use of warfare agents nowadays are further perspectives of thisproject.
