Abstract

In the aftermath of Word War I, it remained unclear for several years of which parts the territory of the Republic of(German‐)Austria exactly consisted. While the legal definition of the state borders was imprecise and inconsistent atthe beginning, it soon became subject to the State Treaty of St. German that considerably reduced the Austrian territoryin contrast to previous expectations. Even after the enactment of the Federal Constitutional Act of 1920, severalissues, such as the separation of Lower Austria and Vienna, the inclusion of Burgenland and the separationmovements in Western Austria, remained on the agenda. Despite the severe losses, however, the territorial consolidationof Austria has survived the century.
