Abstract

The essay follows the ideational path of some quantum physicists in their discussion of the quantizationof blackbody radiation. I focus on notebooks by Paul Ehrenfest and Albert Einstein. The analogies that Ehrenfest and Einstein use to describe the quantum-mechanical „behaviour“of thermal waves all borrow from acoustics. As in the emerging experimental psychology, thethinking of the first Solvay generation is „musically infected“. The article concludes a series ofattempts to describe the genesis of ideas in the natural sciences as „internalistically” as possible,in the tradition of Larry Holmes.
