Abstract

This paper analyses such expressions as “Blessed-(be)-his-nameforever”, “he answered in the time of trouble”, “made a miracle” and “the day of justice” from Palmyrene Aramaic votive inscriptions from the 2nd and 3rd centuries CE. The parallels found in the Mesopotamian religious literature from pre-Hellenistic times lead to the conclusion that these formulas were derived from a hymn or that the texts where they appear can even be seen as short hymns carved in stone glorifying a divine greatness and goodness.
