Abstract

This paper analyses a previously understudied parallel between the final encounters of Gilgamesh and Uta-napishti in the Epic of Gilgamesh and Achilles and Priam in the Iliad. I argue that Homer purposefully reverses thematic elements found in Gilg. in his reworking of the passage. Furthermore, I contextualize this reversal against Assyrian perceptions of Greeks as disordered barbarians.
