The beginning of the construction programme at the Ekur temple initiated by Urnamma, the founder of the Third Dynasty of Ur, is subject to close examination with possible indications of the involvement of the king’s son(s) in the process of laying the foundations. Through correlation with the documentation from 1889–1900, further information is added to the published results of the 1948–50 excavations. In considering the materiality of the foundation, a better understanding of the archaeological evidence on this critical event in the templebuilding process is gained.
