Abstract

Ludwig von Holzgethan was an already retired finance official when he was appointed Cisleithanian Minister of Finance in 1870. The Monarchy had not yet come to rest since the Compromise with Hungary of 1867. Bohemia demanded a comparable position to Hungary with the “Fundamental Articles”. Arguing that these Fundamental Articles would plunge the state into financial chaos, Holzgethan contributed significantly to the failure of the project and subsequently took over the reins of government for a transitional period of 26 days, from 30 October to 25 November 1871. The article attempts to better evaluate the achievements of Holzgethan, who is usually held in low esteem in the secondary literature.
