Abstract

This article analyzes the language of the original version of the ABGB from a gender perspective. Firstly, it examines whether linguistically feminine forms were used and when this was the case. Secondly, the use of gender‐neutral forms is analyzed; thirdly, to what extent women were meant by linguistically masculine forms, and whether it was neces‐sary to make this explicitly clear.

Keywords: ABGB – Austrian Civil Code – gender equality – legal language
