Abstract

In this article, we argue that in a context of low fertility, which characterizes most Western societies around the world and to which many other societies in Latin America and Asia seem to be converging, the proximate determinants of low fertility must be reconsidered. First, it is necessary to identify the age range where differences between low-fertility countries emerge. Second, once the range is identified, it is necessary to identify the proximate determinants of these differences. We argue that leaving the parental home and forming a couple are the key aspects to analyze. The age at which these transitions are completed is key to assessing their impact on fertility.
