Abstract

Birth rates fell in the Nordic coutries in the 2010s and most dramatically so in Finland. The article discusses reasons for fertility decline based on Finnish Family Barometer survey data. The changed “landscape” of Millennials’ childbearing behaviour has been characterised by both the rapid spread of the child-free lifestyle and a higher threshold for entering parenthood for those who want to have children. The wish to have children may have become the key variable influencing fertility in affluent and liberal democracies.
