Zeitschrift für Klassische Philologie, Patristik und lateinische Tradition
This article deals with a widely unknown part of the scientific work of one of the most important Austrian philologists of the 19th century: Karl Schenkl. In the CSEL archive I found his preparatory work for a critical edition of Ambrose’s works on virginity and widowhood. This article will describe the “Nachlass” and how it (indirectly) influenced more recent editions, especially Otto Faller’s Editio minor of De virginibus. Furthermore, collations of a nowlost codex from Chartres, which were also found in Schenkl’s documents, will be presented and some of his textual decisions will be discussed.
