Since the beginnings of urban green space planning—from the “sanitary” green spaces of the 19th century, through “social” green spaces in the 20th century, to “ecological” green spaces from the 1970s onwards—urban green areas have reflected societal and ecological needs. Today, they are not only places of recreation but also key actors in addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. The concept of “cool green”, promoted through the de-paving of surfaces and the creation of climate-friendly, biodiverse open spaces, is gaining increasing importance. The focus is shifting away from aesthetic norms towards a new, ecologically informed aesthetic that fosters sustainable urban development. At the same time, the transformation of urban open spaces requires a society willing to accept new functional and creative concepts of use. At a time when climate adaptation and biodiversity are of central importance, cities must develop future-oriented perspectives for their green infrastructure that take both ecological and social needs into account.
