Zeitschrift für Klassische Philologie, Patristik und lateinische Tradition, Band 139/2026
Although the Gnomologium Vaticanum ed. Sternbach, transmitted in cod. Vat. gr. 743, is the most extensive and best-preserved saying collection of the “apophthegmatic Vulgata”, it nevertheless shows numerous positive and negative traces of secondary editorial interventions. This article demonstrates that Gnom.Vat. and its relatives go back to a non-independent tradition in which the apophthegmatic collection, whose offspring is Gnom.Vat., forms a subsection within a larger editorial context comprising heterogeneous collections and saying traditions as its compilative neighbours. The duplicate sayings of these (due to tradition partially invisible) neighbours have triggered manifold collation processes and affected both the extent of the text corpus and the wording of individual apophthegms.
