Zeitschrift für Klassische Philologie, Patristik und lateinische Tradition, Band 139/2026
As a church politician, theologian and academic organiser, Henry of Langenstein (died 1397) ranks among the outstanding figures of the late Middle Ages in Germany. Less well known is his work as a Latin poet. Particular attention should be paid to his Invectiva contra monstrum Babilonis, written in Vienna in 1393, in which Henry depicts the Western Schism as an unnatural monstrum. This essay examines the hexametric poem with particular regard to the genre of verse satire.
