This monograph was written as an answer to the question posed by the Hannes Androsch Prize 2011 on “how to design a social security system which can withstand the dual threat of demographic developments and financial market risk”. The study provides a variety of theoretical and empirical arguments to support this assertion. In doing so it frequently focuses on a direct comparison between funded and unfunded systems. In particular, I discuss two major claims that are often put forward in support of the funded system: that it is associated with a higher rate of return and that it is more robust to demographic changes.
