The present volume contains 24 essays by international scholars who explore a wide range of fictional and non-fictional texts dealing with actual and imagined border crossings.
Over the last few decades the real and imaginative reflection of movement, be it in the form of (mass) migration or individual travel, has inspired lively debates and research
in travel literature and cultural studies. While some articles in this collection analyze the literary and artistic fruit of transatlantic expeditions by
European travelers in the 19th century, the majority offer fresh perspectives on recent travelogues by Canadian and US American authors.
On the basis of these texts, the multiple meanings and consequences of political and physical boundary crossings on the North American continent and
beyond, including the transcendence of boundaries between ethnic groups, have been investigated.
Border crossings between media, for instance the poetical rendition of paintings, or the passage of spatial and temporal boundaries in North American "global fiction",
are also interpreted, demonstrating the importance of traveling in today's globalized world. The essays gathered here draw on such disciplines as social psychology, cultural anthropology, art history, and comparative literature. The volume also includes an essayistic and fictional representation of the experience of traveling by the prominent Canadian author Aritha van Herk. |
