Mediated Narratives and Images in Austrian-American Relations
The “European Recovery Program” (ERP) is best remembered for its role in helping to reconstruct the European economy, as well as buttress the continent’s democracy. Maybe the most lasting legacy of the Marshall Plan is the central role it played in the genesis of post-World War II European integration as a “peace-making” project. On the other hand, the Marshall Plan quickly became part of Cold War strategies and cemented the division of Europe into East and West. This paper is largely based on a recently published book by Bischof / Petschar (2017) and emphasizes the communication strategies of the Marshall Plan in Austria.
