Abstract

The Nakh-Daghestanian Avar, Andic and Tsezic languages have a type of enclitic that is absent in the other languages of the same family. These enclitics are found in local reflexive constructions and fulfil different functions, such as expressing empathic reflexivization, signaling identity in a way similar to the words very or same in English and expressing contrast and scalar additivity. In the present paper, I will describe the different functions of these particles and analyze the components which at first glance seem almost like an arbitrary collection of semantic domains, but which can be grouped into two central semantic areas: identity and alternatives.
