The establishment of the Department for Digitalization and Knowledge Management at the Austrian Federal Monuments Office in 2021 marked a strategic shift toward integrating digital practices into heritage conserva-tion. The article outlines the institutional reorganization and the development of a comprehensive digitalization strategy aimed at making the Office’s extensive historical and administrative records—spanning nearly 175 years—digitally accessible. Central to this process is not only the digitization of archival materials but also the continuous curation of high-quality metadata to ensure accessibility, contextualization, and long-term usability. The paper emphasizes a dual approach: the retrospective digitization of historical holdings and the integration of born-digital records into ongoing administrative workflows. In an era increasingly shaped by AI-generated content, the Federal Monuments Office positions itself as a reliable provider of curated, verified data and highlights the critical role of structured data management in sustainable heritage documentation.
